In 2019, the NBA and the G-League announced that the latter would be expanding to Mexico City.

The team, Capitanes, will be the 29th G-League program and the first based outside of the United States or Canada, and is slated to begin its first season of play when the G-League season kicks off in the fall.

However, the team won’t play its inaugural season in Mexico as previously planned.

Due to concerns surrounding the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, the Capitanes will play their games in the United States in existing league markets, according to longtime NBA insider Marc Stein

The Capitanes will be a member of the G-League for at least the next five years and when play returns to Mexico, will play their home games at the Gimnasio Juan de la Barrera in Mexico City.
